What is anodising?

Anodising — short for „electrolytic oxidation of aluminium” — electrochemically reinforces and builds up the aluminium’s natural oxide layer. Unlike a coating, the protective layer is formed from the material itself — it does not peel, flake or chip off.

The resulting aluminium oxide layer is extremely hard, corrosion-resistant and electrically insulating. By embedding dyes into the open pores, we can also colour the component — from natural through bronze tones to deep black. A final sealing step closes the pores and makes the layer permanently durable.

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ about Anodising

We anodise all common wrought and die-cast alloys — typically EN AW-5005, 5754, 6060, 6063, 6082 and many more. Highly alloyed or silicon-rich materials may show a slight colour variation — we will confirm the result with a free sample beforehand.

Anodised colours are embedded in the oxide pores and protected by sealing. Indoors they are virtually unlimited in lifespan. Outdoors they are UV-stable and hold their tone for many years — natural, black and the bronze tones are especially light-fast.

During anodising, about half of the layer grows into the material and half on top — so the dimensional increase is only ~50% of the layer thickness. For a standard 20 µm layer that is about 10 µm per side. For tight tolerances and functional surfaces we account for this or mask off areas selectively.

Paint is an applied coating that can chip or scratch. Anodising is part of the component itself — the protective layer is grown from the aluminium and bonded with the base material. It is therefore significantly more scratch- and abrasion-resistant, electrically insulating and heat-resistant up to ~200 °C.

Yes, with selective masking and multi-step anodising, two-tone components are possible. This is more complex and only sensible for selected geometries — please contact us for your specific project.
